AAUW California Connection – July 2020

July 6, 2020

A message to our valued members:

COVID-19 has changed the way people do things. AAUW California is no exception. We view this as an opportunity to experiment with a new approach to our mission of supporting branches and we want to share our plans with all of you.

How will we meet our mission differently this year?

We have established four umbrella priorities/pillars to drive our activity. These are designed to:

  • align better with AAUW National’s priorities (Governance & Sustainability, Leadership, Education & Training, Economic Security)
  • respond to the needs branches have identified
  • change the traditional state committee structure in favor of a more collaborative approach

How will AAUW California change to meet these goals?

The entire board of directors, committee chairs, and other state leaders will work together as a consolidated Leadership Team. The traditional structure and work of some committees will be changed to allow the Leadership Team more opportunities to work collaboratively on projects that cut across traditional committee lines. This will let people bring their expertise, skills, interests, and especially passion, where they can do the most good.

Success Plan 2020-2021

The organization will operate on two tracks:

Track I. Collaborative Projects:

The backbone of your state board’s work will be to develop unique, short-term, timely projects that foster a team approach to meet our umbrella goals. For 2020-2021, we have developed a series of online workshops to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity to reach our branches and members through videoconferencing. We are elated that these workshops will be an expansion of the prior in-person Leadership Development Days. They will relate to the four California priorities above with a “how to” focus and will be open to members as well as branch leaders. See below for a preliminary list of the exciting things to come!

Track II. Leadership Team:

The Leadership Team will continue to deliver the services that branches need and are resources for you.

    • Committee positions are for two years. Click HERE to apply for a specific position by July 15th (so hurry!)
    • To volunteer to help with a workshop, contact the workshop leader listed below.
  • Watch your email for workshop announcements and “Zoom” in on those that interest you (we hope there’ll be a lot!)
  • Watch for short-term opportunities to serve on a task force, such as to select awards for exemplary branch programs.

And here’s a teaser of what’s to come!
