The founding of the United Nations (UN) was born out of the armed conflict and destruction Western Europe and Asia suffered during World War II. Its mission was to Maintain International Peace and Security and Protect Human Rights. The preamble states:
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom…
To help achieve these worthy goals, a cadre of like-minded peoples formed a volunteer organization known as the United Nations Association (UNA) to support the vital work of the UN mission. 2025 celebrates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, and this video by the Executive Director of the UNA celebrates this achievement and asks for our continued commitment.
