Franklin at Sonoma

June 1, 2025

Campers from Northern California attend Tech Trek at Sonoma State, which is located east of Rohnert Park and north of Cotati, approximately 10 miles south of Santa Rosa and 50 miles north of San Francisco. The Tech Trek Program first came to Sonoma State in 2008 after seven years at Mills College in Oakland.

Our camp is named after Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958), a British chemist and x-ray crystallographer. A forgotten heroine, she discovered key properties of specific proteins of DNA through her work on the x-ray diffraction images. This led to the discovery of the DNA double helix.

What’s special about TT at Sonoma? How about a field trip to Russian River watershed, astronomy night, picturesque campus, facilities…and a variety of engaging, hands-on STEM workshops?

Camp Co-Director

Diane Coventry

Diane Coventry is a long-time AAUW member. She learned about Tech Trek in 1999 when her daughter attended Tech Trek at Stanford. Diane is a former Chevron USA geologic assistant and a retired elementary and middle school science teacher.  She has nominated and selected girls for Tech Trek, been a class monitor, helping with classes, workshops, and field trips. Diane is the branch coordinator for the Pleasant Hill-Martinez branch.  This is her 5th year as co-Director, starting in 2019. Diane is a lifelong learner, passionate about science and the importance of women in STEM.

Camp Co-Director

Jessica Gong

Jessica Gong attended camp in 2002 at Mills College. Jessica graduated from UC Davis, where she majored in Economics and Biology. Jessica credits Tech Trek with having supported her excitement about science and teaching her how to sustain the willpower to stick it out when the classes grew increasingly difficult in high school and college. Jessica works full time in tech, and this is her 3rd year as co-director.

Assistant Director

Lily Cohen

Lily Cohen attended camp in 2014 at Stanford. For college, she has attended U of A, UH Manoa, and is finishing her Fashion Design degree at SFSU. Lily’s love for STEM has always been apparent and was spurred further by her time at Tech Trek. She enjoys utilizing STEM skills in her design and production process. Lily is also a Marketing Manager for a security technology company based in Hawai’i, and this is her first year as Assistant Director.
