Join the AAUW Torrance Branch on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 1:30 PM to celebrate Women’s History Month featuring the Women’s Stories and Cross-Border Collaboration in South Asia.
The speaker will be Esha Niyogi De, PhD, who teaches in the Faculty of Humanities at UCLA and is Affiliate of the UCLA Center for India and South Asia. Her research focuses on South Asian women, film history, and literary history. She is the author of, among other publications, Women’s Transborder Cinema (University of Illinois Press, 2024) and Empire, Media, and the Autonomous Woman: A Feminist Critique of Postcolonial Thought (Oxford University Press, 2011).
Drawing on the rare research and many oral interviews she conducted for her new book Women’s Transborder Cinema, Esha’s talk dives into a remarkable history of women directors and entrepreneurs in the film industries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Focusing on women making fiction films about women, Esha tells forgotten stories of how women filmmakers claim creative agency and forge cross-border ties in these countries. The talk will include clips from films made by Aparna Sen and Gauri Shinde (India), Shamim Ara (Pakistan), Kohinoor Akhtar Shuchanda (Bangladesh), among others.
An RSVP is required. Please email aauwtorrance@gmail.com. Light refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there.
