To mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, UN Women is launching a new campaign, “Generation Equality” The campaign demands equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women and girls, health-care services that respond to their needs, and their equal participation in political life and decision-making in all areas of life. https://www.unwomen.org/en
In 1995, the eyes of the world were on China, where thousands of women gathered to attend one or both of two significant events: The 1995 NGO Forum on Women and the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women. The U.N. conference took a vital step in bringing women’s equality issues to the global stage. The 2020 “Generation Equality” campaign will commemorate and advance that work.
AAUW played a role in the historic 1995 event. “The major work of the conference was transforming a draft plan for action — the result of two-and-a-half years of preparation — into final, acceptable form. AAUW was a contributor to the writing of the United States’ national report, and our input was sought by the delegation in regard to the section on education in the platform”.
