AAUW California’s Reproductive Rights History

Our involvement in reproductive rights dates back to 1935 when a legislative program included an item calling for “legalizing the dispensing of information by physicians on contraception.”

Since the adoption of a resolution in 1971, choice in the determination of one’s reproductive life, including the right to privacy, has been a priority in AAUW’s legislative program, both in California and nationally. See the first Public Policy Priority under Societal Change.

Adopted by AAUW California Convention, San Diego, April 2009, and consistent with
the 2009 – 2011 national AAUW Biennial Action Priorities.

A Woman Knows Best

The California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom has developed a new framework for reproductive rights emphasizing that "a woman knows best for herself and her family." The materials include a web video and discussion guide. Check it out at   http://www.awomanknowsbest.org/.
