Public Policy

What is the Basis for AAUW Public Policy Activities?

  • AAUW has a long tradition of advocating for positive societal change and political activism, both at the national and state levels.  AAUW is positively regarded by legislators for its studied, well-informed positions on proposed legislation, and for its research projects.
  • The adopted Public Policy Program includes the Association federal biennial priorities, the AAUW principles for Action, California biennial action priorities and may also include branch priorities if branches choose to adopt local priorities.
  • The Public Policy Program governs ALL ACTION in the name of AAUW.

AAUW CA Public Policy Goals for 2009-10

Members of the AAUW CA Public Policy Committee met in July 2009 to set goals for the coming year. Our major areas of work are:

  • Build broader recognition among state legislators and elected officials of AAUW CA as an informed and trusted advocate for women's issues.
  • Train, inform, and activate AAUW members for effective advocacy.
  • Streamline the functions of the Committee for a more effective advocacy process.

Some of the committee’s objectives for the coming year include regular communication with Branch Public Policy Chairs, including information for use in branch newsletters; studying the feasibility of establishing an AAUW CA Lobby Corps; establishing a program for AAUW CA similar to the national “Two-Minute Activist”; meeting with individual legislators to inform them about AAUW’s mission and legislative priorities.
