California Special Projects Fund

The AAUW California Special Projects Fund (SPF) supports state-wide projects and local scholarship programs that further education and equity for all women and girls. All our supported projects are affiliated with the California AAUW organization, a California AAUW district, a local AAUW branch in California, or a coalition of these organizations.

The SPF does not provide funding directly. Instead, it serves as a pass-through fund, enabling projects to collect tax-deductible donations from individuals and corporations without having to establish themselves as a separate non-profit entity.

The SPF is a 501c(3) tax-exempt corporation as provided by the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board. It is not intended to compete with any other AAUW funds.

Have a project in mind?
The SPF supports projects that promote education and equity for all women and girls and support the AAUW Mission. Projects that seek to influence legislation, support candidates for office, or benefit solely AAUW members or individuals are specifically excluded.

Each project requesting SPF support must complete an application, which will be considered by the SPF Board of Directors. Branches who are just participating in a state sponsored project (such as Tech Trek, or other joint district or inter-branch projects) do not need to submit an application.

The project must have a budget of $2500 or more. The SPF board will consider each project separately, according to the following criteria:

  • Goal or purpose of the project
  • Description of the project
  • Who it will serve
  • Proposed budget detailing revenue and expenses
  • Number of members and community partners involved
  • Expected outcomes
  • Proof of current participation in AAUW California Liability Insurance
The application details what information the board needs to make a decision, as well as the fees involved. Be sure to read it carefully and follow the directions.
Local AAUW Scholarship Programs
The SPF Board adopted local AAUW scholarships as an ongoing program in August 2005. Scholarships accepted by SPF for financial administration must have a minimum budget of $1000.

To be considered, applicants must demonstrate ongoing support of the AAUW Educational Foundation and the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. The application details all the requirements and the fees involved. Be sure to read it carefully and follow the directions when applying.

SPF Financials
The SPF is a "pass-through" fund. Approved projects secure funding and deposit directly to the SPF. Each project or program is responsible for its own accounting; the fund does not do accounting for the projects that use it. All projects and programs with funds held in the SPF must keep accurate records.

Release of funds is dependent upon available revenue in the account. Each project or program must have a designated fiscal agent and must file a final financial report with the SPF Treasurer within 45 days of the annual close of the project or program.

The SPF assesses an administrative fee of 3%, with a minimum of $30, on each project or program that uses the fund. The fee calculation is based on actual revenues received.

How to Apply
Note that local scholarship programs use a separate application.

We must receive your project applications at least 90 days prior to the scheduled project commencement date. Applications must be complete; see the form for details.

To request SPF support for a local AAUW scholarship, the scholarship fund director must complete the SPF Local Scholarships application (48K, MS Word format).
