Napa County Branch past presidents selling their pins at the Annual Meeting in Sacramento.

Many branches like to present their outgoing presidents with a Past President pin. Designed by Napa County Branch Past President Gladys Johnson, this pin has been available since 1970. Branches form the letters AAUW and the leaves symbolize each past president as vital to the life of the branch. The Educational Opportunity Fund receives all proceeds.

LAF Luncheon 2013 Was an Inspiring Success!

Burlingame's Embassy Suites buzzed on Saturday, March 16 with the sound of AAUW women supporting one of our favorite causes.

Jennifer Reisch, Legal Director for Equal Rights Advocates spoke to the group about her work as attorney for Betty Dukes in her suit against Wal-Mart. Her words were inspiring as they demonstrated how LAF funds are used to support the case.

During luncheon conversation with AAUW CA President, Alicia Hetman, Jennifer was also inspired -- to complete the application form and become a member of AAUW!

With a matching funds challenge from Gloria Weston, longtime supporter and activist for LAF and for whom the Gloria Weston Outreach Fund is named, luncheon attendees were inspired to raise $3600 on the spot.

Branch Program of the Month: November 2012

The AAUW CA Program Committee has selected Riverside Branch's program on human trafficking as Program of the Month.

At their LAF luncheon on November 2, 2012. Riverside featured Anne Rogan, the aunt of Sara Kruzan, pictured.

Sara was a victim of human trafficking sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole when she killed her pimp in 1994. She was sixteen years old at the time, and had been trafficked since she was 13. She is now seeking a new trial.

AAUW Funds Luncheons a Big Success!

Large numbers of members and guests turned out at all three luncheons, held last month in San Jose, Napa, and Knotts Berry Farm. These much-anticipate annual events are a wonderful opportunity for members to see first hand how their contributions are used in fellowships and grants. It also gives the recipients of our fundraising efforts a chance to learn more about AAUW and the efforts that are put into creating those Funds.

Announcing State Named Gift Honorees

The AAUW Funds Committee, with the approval of the 2011-12 AAUW CA Board, has selected two State Named Gift Honorees. Both applications were deemed so worthy of this award that it was not possible to choose just one!

The San Jose Branch AAUW Funds team of Jean Reed, and Jean Boyden and Barbara Shaffer (left to right in the first photo, above) spearheaded the formation of the San Jose Branch Centennial American Fellowship for $200,000. Under their leadership this Fellowship was completed in only four years! Their enthusiasm and dedication encouraged the San Jose Branch members to donate 50% of the fund and sister AAUW CA Branches to donate the other 50%. Because of their efforts the first young woman will receive a San Jose Branch Centennial American Fellowship this fall. Thank you, Jean, Barbara and Jean.

Mansourian v UC Davis Court Dates

In Sacramento's Federal Court, the LAF trial continues this week, June 1 and June 2, 9-4:30, and possibly June 3 either half day or full day. It will also run next week, June 6-9, 9-4:30.

AAUW members are urged to attend and show support. Also, this is a tremendously good way for anyone who is not a Title IX expert to actually learn how the "three-prong test" is to be used correctly to determine athletic opportunity compliance.

LAF Trial Began Monday May 23 in Sacramento

The Title IX plaintiffs in the case against UC Davis are being heard in Federal Court. The trial will continue this week and next, at Federal Court House, 501 "I" Street, downtown Sacramento, Floor 15, Courtroom 2. Plenty of parking nearby.

Dates Set For LAF Trial: Mansourian v UC Davis

In their lawsuit, Mansourian v. Regents of the University of California, Arezou Mansourian and other former members of the University of California, Davis’s women’s wrestling team say that the university discriminated against them in violation of Title IX. Over the last decade, their case has gone through different courts to determine whether or not there was sufficient notice of the discrimination, not whether or not discrimination occurred. On May 23 they will at last have a hearing on the merits of the case. The case never would have reached this point without AAUW’s support.

The trial will be held in federal court at 501 I St., Sacramento, California. It starts at 1:30 p.m. on May 23 in the courtroom of Judge Damrell and will continue beginning at 9 a.m. May 24–26, May 30–June 2, and June 6–9. Local AAUW members are encouraged to attend.

LAF case against UC Davis to be heard in Federal Court in Sacramento

The  Mansourian v UC Davis case is going to trial on May 23 in federal court in Sacramento. A time has not been yet set but will probably be around 10:00am. The Mansourian lawyers would love to have local AAUW members there to show support.

The US Federal Courthouse in Sacramento is located at 501 “I” Street, Suite 10 – 100, Sacramento, CA. There is a two story parking structure at 7th Street and “G” Street.

Amtrak has a station at 401 “I” Street, Sacramento, easy walking distance to the Courthouse.

AAUW Funds Director, Lorelei Self, reports that new forms for 2010-11 have been posted under AAUW Funds in the Forms & Documents section of this website.

These new forms are to be used as we send branch and individual contributions to the national office of AAUW, a recent change in the process for donations to the funds.

Lorelei advises branch AAUW Funds chairs to download and begin using these forms right away.

April 19 Event Cancelled

We regretfully announce that the Gloria Weston Campus Outreach Program scheduled for Monday, April 19th at the Claremont Colleges, has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

LAF Luncheon Attendees Hear Henley's Horror Story

Approximately 75 attendees listened intently Saturday as Michelle Jaureguito Henley related the horrific details of the unjust treatment she and her two co-plaintiffs received from the administration and trustees of Feather River Community College. At times overcome with emotion, even though the case began nearly five years ago, Henley slowly and deliberately revealed the events of her story.

After being unjustly accused of participating in and condoning the bad behavior of her staff member, Henley lost her career, her credibility in the community and her marriage. She spoke of the many times she had felt like just giving up and walking away from the fight, but each time she was spurred on by the encouragement of her co-plaintiffs and by AAUW members who have heard her story and offered their support.

Donations for 2009 AAUW Funds are due by December 1, 2009.
Please remember they must reach our AAUW Funds treasurers by December 15th for proper crediting in 2009. You may download the forms on our California Website at www.aauw-ca.org. Just click on forms and documents and go to AAUW Funds and LAF. Please make out all checks to AAUW Funds and in the memo line signify the fund number. Send the donation forms to:
