AAUW-CA Online branch announces the kick-off of its 2010-2011 Programming Schedule

Our inaugural presentation will be by Elahe Amani, former AAUW-CA International Chair, and a world renowned activist for women's issues, especially in the Middle East.

You are welcome to try the Online branch through this presentation without joining. Please mail caralex@verizon.net to be added to this exciting and current presentation. We have a full schedule of programming in which you can fully participate without having to leave your home!

Now is a great time to experience the Online Branch which has members from all over the country. For AAUW-CA members the cost is a $10 dual membership fee and for those in other states there is the added $16 state dues.

Greetings from the 30th triennial IFUW Conference in Mexico City. IFUW (www.ifuw.org)which stands for International Federation of University Women is a collective of Federations (like AAUW) from all over the world. AAUW was a member for many years but financial considerations precluded continued membership. The United States is now represented by Women Graduates-USA (www.wg-usa.org).

After watching the recent telecast Half the Sky Live with 30 of my southern sisters, several questions came to mind. The one that surfaces this morning, more than likely because Iraq just held its challenging elections, is the issue of arranged child marriages. How the elections play out, and whether or not the fate of girls and women in Iraq will change, depends largely on the new president’s stand on Article 14 of the Iraqi Constitution, which allows for girls ages 9 to 14 to be “given away” in marriage. You are invited to participate in 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence. It starts November 25, United Nations International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends December 10, Human Rights Day, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Women's Equity Council of the United Nations Association, together with AAUW, LWV and other organizations, will present several events in the San Diego area beginning with a tour of the San Diego Family Justice Center, November 25, 5:30 pm .

TRAVEL TO NEPAL AND INDIA with the Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund (VGIF)

The Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund (VGIF) announces a Friendship Tour to India and Nepal in November 2009 to help celebrate 40 years of funding projects for women and children around the world. The tour includes Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan and Calcutta, plus an optional visit to Kathmandu and Chitwan in Nepal. It highlights a visit to Project Five-O Calcutta, one of our earliest projects.

This is a unique opportunity to foster cultural exchange and connect with women around the globe, sharing ideas and dreams in our mission to invest in women worldwide.

AAUW CA Director of International Advocacy, Sherry Ludwig, submitted this report June 30 to the board of directors:

"I presented on behalf of AAUW CA at the CA Commission on the Status of Women hearing that took place in San Diego last Thursday. The topic was CEDAW and the needs of immigrant women in CA.The Commission hearing was FABULOUS! The entire experience was extremely worthwhile.
