Branch Program of the Month: April 2013

Fresno County Branch, our newest branch, consisting of less than 20 members, did their first informational outreach on the campus of California State University Fresno on April 9, 2013 celebrating the unhappy holiday of Equal Pay Day. Over 85% of their members participated in one way or other to make the event a success.

Members purchased PayDay candy bars (labeled with "not fun" facts about pay inequity) as their hook to get the passing students to stop and chat for a few minutes about what Equal Pay Day means and how it affects them.

Along with the on campus team, one member volunteered to handle the publicity for the event. She was very successful - letter to the editor, large article in the Fresno Bee Business Section on the day of the event and, to top it off, TV news coverage on the most popular channel in the Fresno market!

As they were wrapping up on the day of the event, they were planning to do this event on an annual basis and expanding to their local community college.

2013 Speech Trek Winners!

The final round of the 2013 Eleanor Stem Allen Speech Trek Contest was held on Saturday, April 20 at the AAUW CA Annual Meeting. The three finalists gave their speeches and the prizes were awarded.

Branch Program of the Month: March 2013

Amador Branch wins our March Program of the Month, with their second annual Women’s History Month Essay Contest. Each junior high female contestant wrote an essay on “A Woman I Admire” and as always, they were impressive.

First place winners were Abbagail Neely (above left, with her mom) from Ione Jr. High, with an essay about Anne Frank entitled “Dear Diary,” and Sofia Neville-Segura (above right, with her mom) from Jackson Jr. High who wrote about J.K. Rowling in an essay entitled “Inspiration.”

Second place prizes went to Audrey Busi of Ione Jr. High with her essay “Selfless Woman, Loving Mother” about her mother, Darcie Busi, and a Jackson Jr. High student with her essay “Amy Carmichael.” Third place winners were Ione Jr. High students Sydney Julien, who wrote about Helen Keller in “The Woman Who Wowed Us All,” and Andrea Romero, who wrote about Susan B. Anthony in an essay entitled “Justice for Women.”

Branch Program of the Month: February 2013

Selecting our February Branch Program of the Month was difficult, and we're proud to announce that California Online is the winning branch for an outstanding program on "The Invisible War."

As preparation for the weeklong discussion, interested members signed up for the program listserve and branch program director, Krys Wulff asked these participants to view the documentary on their own, inviting prospective members to join them. For more background, Krys also provided a link to a NY Times blog article with excerpts from an interview with one of the filmmakers, Kirby Dick. The level of engagement of the members was amazing, with 35 members "attending" the program while 16 actually shared opinions and insights. Remember, this program was carried out entirely through the branch's program listserve. Holly Kearl, AAUW LAF Director, also answered questions about the cases in the film and provided links to more details. She also provided a list of actions that can be taken by members inspired by the film. Krys ended the program with a challenge, offering to match participants’ donations to LAF.To date, the on-line branch has raised over $1200 for LAF.

Victor Valley: Celebrating Women for Seven Years

AAUW Victor Valley hosted 269 young ladies at the seventh annual Celebrating Women in Math and Science event at Victor Valley College. Almost half of the girls present were eighth graders. This is very important because we are preparing girls earlier to start thinking about their future careers.

We need to thank the San Bernardino County Alliance for Education for their continued support of this project. Also, Mojave Water Agency has sponsored this event since the beginning with $1,000 each year. There are many more organizations that collaborated with us on this and we are thankful for their cooperation. We are preparing our girls for the future.

$tart $mart in The New York Times!

After publication of the new AAUW report, “Graduating to a Pay Gap,” and the Watch Party at UC Merced, $tart $mart has now been featured in the Business Section of the New York Times. Click HERE to read the article.

$tart $mart Campus Initiative is a partnership between WAGE and AAUW. AAUW California selected this project to be part of our Financial Literacy Program to bring pay equity by teaching our young college women to speak out and ask for what they deserve when they go for their first professional job interview.

Using our Community Action Grant and working for three years, AAUW CA has trained many members to be Facilitators and twenty-two workshops all over California have trained many students. Now two members who worked with WAGE and AAUW CA to become Field Managers are our State Coordinators. If you are planning a $$ workshop please let them know.

The AAUW-CA Program Committee has chosen the Benicia-Vallejo branch to be the first "Outstanding Branch Program of the Month." The branch joined with other like-minded organizations in the community to present a free screening of Miss Representation on Thursday, September 20, 2012.

San Fernando Valley Presents Phyllis Coven

Phyllis Coven, the Director of District 23, US Citizenship and Immigration Service, was guest speaker at San Fernando Valley's September 15 meeting. Coven spoke about the challenges of her position and the new Obama initiative, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allows qualified undocumented immigrants to obtain work authorization for two years and be free of the fear of deportation during that period.

It's estimated that one-third of all such potential applicants live in California. The branch honored Coven with national and state membership in AAUW.

$tart $mart Brings Financial Literacy to Women and Girls

Bakula Maniar, Financial Literacy Director, reports that the $tart $mart Campus Initiative Project is progressing very well throughout the state. More than 125 AAUW California members have been trained as facilitators who can approach their nearby colleges about presenting workshops. We used our AAUW Community Action Grant to give more than twenty-two workshops in the last two years and now we will fund the workshops ourselves.

We have two Regional Field Managers who will work closely with WAGE, under our Financial Literacy Program, to coordinate $tart $mart workshops and report to the board.

Money Trek is Rolling Out!

Is your branch looking for an exciting new program? Many AAUW members who attended the Financial Literacy convention workshop on our Money Trek project were very excited and eager to bring it to their branches.

The training modules have been posted on this website in the Forms & Documents section (HERE). All six modules are in Power Point format, ready for you to present in the community or in your branch. You can also modify the modules to fit the needs of your audience. We hae prepared a workbook that will be on the website within weeks.

There are no program fees and anyone can present the workshop.

We have two team members who can guide you on how to present Money Trek workshop.

Bullying . . . What's It All About

BULLIES ANONYMOUS

Program Director, Cathy Foxhoven, wants you to not miss out on the Bullying Plenary featuring 19 elementary students from five schools in Burlingame and other Bay area schools when they present BULLIES ANONYMOUS at Convention, Friday, April 13th at 1:30PM. This performance will be followed by Napa Valley's presentation of "Cyber-Bullying".

Sherry Ludwig Follows Holly Kearl's "Crossing the Line" Presentations

Holly Kearl's recent visit in California was a whirlwind as she went to three areas in one weekend: Napa, Berkeley and San Jose. I followed her from Berkeley to San Jose. Holly's presentation on harassment and bullying was both informational and insightful. It was informed by some brilliant research on the part of AAUW and its expert team.

One of the main pieces of information that I gleaned from the lecture was the difference between harassment and bullying.
