AAUW California - Financial Literacy

$tart $mart Workshops Scheduled May 15th and 16th

We are happy to introduce Financial Literacy’s new endeavor, $tart Smart, to AAUW CA. $tart $mart Campus Initiative empowers young women starting their careers to avoid the gender wage gap. The collaboration between WAGE and AAUW provides college junior and senior women, the knowledge and skills for approaching the job market. They learn how to negotiate salaries and benefits so that they are able to receive fair and realistic compensation.

As planned, we are going to have the first two workshops before the end of June. On Saturday, May 15th our first $tart $mart Campus workshop will be offered at Las Positas College in Livermore. The second workshop will be held on Sunday, May 16th at UCSD in San Diego.

Money Wi$e Women Conference in Sacramento

On September 26, 9:00-5:30, at CSU Sacramento the Sacramento Branch joins many like minded organizations to present their 3rd annual Money Wi$e Women conference as a community outreach program on Financial Literacy for women and girls.

This is the best investment money can buy for our members. The registration fee includes Marcia Brixey's book "Money Therapist" and lunch.

Seven Life Defining Financial Decisions, May 9

San Diego Branch of AAUW is presenting a Mother's Day gift for San Diego women with a workshop on May 9th, "Seven Life Defining Financial Decisions". This Financial Literacy workshop is designed to empower women from first job through retirement. Eunis, a member of the Financial Literacy Committee also did a presentation on March 21 in Simi Valley Branch with Simi Valley branch member Marietta Spotts. It was a very interesting session concerning Financial Literacy on Retirement and how it impacts women. The outline and material used for this session can be duplicated by anyone who has some basic knowledge of insurance, investment and health care needs. Financial Literacy 101 Pilot Program Was a Big Success!

Congratulations to Ginny Hatfield and the San Fernando Valley Branch!

To celebrate Financial Literacy month the SFV branch showcased a very successful Financial Literacy 101 pilot project on April 2nd. Three AAUW CA Directors volunteered and had the great pleasure of doing a worthwhile community service while fulfilling AAUW’s vision of education, research and advocacy.

Junior Achievement provided a daylong workshop with the collaboration of a number of entities and provided the facility used. Four high schools of the L.A. Unified School District participated by sending more than eighty students from their 11th and 12th grade classes. [More]

Financing Your Future Workshop

A free workshop on personal finance for educators and others working with at-risk young women and girls will be presented November 1, 9:00-3:30, at Cal State Fresno's Smittcamp Alumni House. Participants will receive a copy of the DVD Financing Your Future, prepared by the Natl. Council of Economic Education. The event is funded by AAUW and the Center for Economic Research and Education of Central California.
