Tech Trek to add UC Davis camp for 2011

Beginning next summer, Tech Trek will have a 9^th camp, at U.C. Davis. Planning for this camp has been underway since February with Lisa Beauchamp of the Sacramento branch as camp director. She will be ably assisted by Deedee Hays also of the Sacramento branch. Stay tuned for further information.

AAUW-CA Online branch announces the kick-off of its 2010-2011 Programming Schedule

Our inaugural presentation will be by Elahe Amani, former AAUW-CA International Chair, and a world renowned activist for women's issues, especially in the Middle East.

You are welcome to try the Online branch through this presentation without joining. Please mail caralex@verizon.net to be added to this exciting and current presentation. We have a full schedule of programming in which you can fully participate without having to leave your home!

Now is a great time to experience the Online Branch which has members from all over the country. For AAUW-CA members the cost is a $10 dual membership fee and for those in other states there is the added $16 state dues.

Women's Equality Day in Benicia-Vallejo

On Thursday, August 26, the Benicia-Vallejo Branch celebrated the 90^th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the US constitution which granted women the right to vote. Organized by B-V's Public Policy chair, Nancy Parent-Smith, the very successful event was attended by a number of elected officials, a reporter from the local newspaper and 40-50 branch members. Sue Miller, AAUW CA Vice President/Public Policy Director was a featured speaker.

Greetings from the 30th triennial IFUW Conference in Mexico City. IFUW (www.ifuw.org)which stands for International Federation of University Women is a collective of Federations (like AAUW) from all over the world. AAUW was a member for many years but financial considerations precluded continued membership. The United States is now represented by Women Graduates-USA (www.wg-usa.org).

AAUW Funds Director, Lorelei Self, reports that new forms for 2010-11 have been posted under AAUW Funds in the Forms & Documents section of this website.

These new forms are to be used as we send branch and individual contributions to the national office of AAUW, a recent change in the process for donations to the funds.

Lorelei advises branch AAUW Funds chairs to download and begin using these forms right away.

Give a Grad a Gift!

How many of us have children who are graduating from college this year? My daughter graduated in June from Cal State East Bay, and I gave her the gift of AAUW membership. If our children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews don't join, how can we expect everyone else to join?

I just filled out the Give a Grad a Gift Application on the National website www.aauw.org.

The AAUW CA Board of Directors has agreed to wave the California 2010-2011 state dues for these new members. If the new member decides to join a branch, she will only need to pay the branch dues.

Please give a gift to new grads.

Most Branches Have Completed Branch Officers Report

The online process for reporting 2010-11 branch officers was streamlined this year and 105 branches had completed the form by June 29. The form can be found HERE and a required username and password were sent to 2009-10 branch presidents.

Deadline for submitting the report is July 1, 2010. If your branch has been unable to complete the form, please contact webteam@aauw-ca.org.

Branch Presidents to Complete Branch Officer Report

2009-10 branch Presidents and Presidents-Elect should have received an email broadcast from the AAUW Web Team announcing that the AAUW CA Branch Officers Report (BOR) is available for online completion. (It was sent on 5/23/10.) The deadline for completion is July 1, 2010.

If no one in your branch received the communication, it means that the AAUW CA database does not have a correct email address for any of your branch’s presidents or presidents-elect. Please contact webteam@aauw-ca.org to discuss the problem.

If several people in the branch received the message, decide which one will be responsible for completing the BOR.

The BOR can be reached at www.aauw-ca.org/bor or by clicking HERE. You must log in with the unique information provided in the email. Once you have logged in, follow the on-screen instructions.

$tart $mart Workshops Scheduled May 15th and 16th

We are happy to introduce Financial Literacy’s new endeavor, $tart Smart, to AAUW CA. $tart $mart Campus Initiative empowers young women starting their careers to avoid the gender wage gap. The collaboration between WAGE and AAUW provides college junior and senior women, the knowledge and skills for approaching the job market. They learn how to negotiate salaries and benefits so that they are able to receive fair and realistic compensation.

As planned, we are going to have the first two workshops before the end of June. On Saturday, May 15th our first $tart $mart Campus workshop will be offered at Las Positas College in Livermore. The second workshop will be held on Sunday, May 16th at UCSD in San Diego.

Women's Leadership Training Institute

AAUW CA will present a leadership training event on Friday, April 30 from 1:00 - 5:00 pm at the San Ramon Marriott Hotel, in association with our annual convention.

The basis for the training is a result of responses to our Younger Member Survey, conducted last year. These women specifically requested training in community organizing, participation in the electoral process, and workpace skills such as negotiation.

Keynote speaker, Juana Bordas, is pictured.
