Discussion of Ballot Issues at Annual Meeting

 During the lunch break at our Annual Meeting, several AAUW CA board members attempted to lead a Q&A discussion with members.  The lunch was held in the Capitol basement cafeteria, a very noisy and oddly shaped room.  It was not conducive to group discussion, so the session was brief.

2013 Speech Trek Winners!

The final round of the 2013 Eleanor Stem Allen Speech Trek Contest was held on Saturday, April 20 at the AAUW CA Annual Meeting. The three finalists gave their speeches and the prizes were awarded.

Gray Allen, sponsor, awarded the prizes and made a few remarks about his wife, Eleanor Stem Allen, in whose memory the contest is named.

More Information About "Bullies Anonymous"

Many convention attendees inquired about BULLIES ANONYMOUS.  Branches or schools interested in producing it, can obtain the script and rights from www.badwolfpress.com. The rights are extremely reasonable - about $63.  You get permission to copy the scripts, and a CD of all the songs.  

 
Future performances of the show will be:
  • May 12th, 1PM at Franklin Elementary Carnival, 2385 Trousdale Drive, Burlingame .
  • North Shoreview Montessori will be performing BULLIES ANONYMOUS, June 8th, 7PM. 1301 Cypress Avenue, San Mateo.
  • Bayside Stem Academy will be also performing the show on June 6th, 11:00AM at the Bayside Performing Arts Center, 2025 Kehoe Avenue, San Mateo.  

All performances are free and open to the public.

Convention Connection Corner Was a Huge Success!

Thanks to all those convention attendees who visited the Connection Corner Exploratorium over the weekend and played our Connection Corner Passport game.  

 
Also many thanks to all the branches who participated with their exciting and innovative displays - all very creative.  We hope everyone enjoyed the venue  and ambiance as much as we enjoyed creating it. 
 
The winner of the Saturday night raffle is Shelly Johnson from the San Luis Obispo Branch. She won a one year AAUW National & State membership renewal worth $65.
 
In Connection Corner we honored several branches celebrating exciting branch anniversaries.  They are:

Convention Snapshots -- the convention daily newsletter

Each morning during convention, Convention Snapshots magically appears on tables in the convention area, giving us information about what's going to happen that day as well as a recap of the day before.

Well, actually, there is no magic involved.  Shelley Mitchell, editor, works into the night preparing it. It is printed overnight and delivered to the hotel the next morning.

Financial Literacy Projects Going Strong!

Bakula Maniar, Financial Literacy Director, reports that both Financial Literacy projects are moving forward.

Money Trek  Two Money Trek workshops have been presented recently,  on January 21 to our student affiliates at Mt San Jacinto College and on February 12 to girls aged 12-18, an Advisory Committe for the Santa Clara County Office of Women's Policy.

A third one is scheduled for the same girls in Santa Clara County on March 13.

The Financial Literacy Committee will present a Money Trek workshop at our state convention in April.

$tart $mart  Four facilitator training workshops were held in November in So. California and five more are scheduled.

Speech Trek Finalists Announced

Three students, by delivering some very impassioned, unique and creative speeches, were selected for the final competition: Montanna Tarkington, a sophomore from Tulare Union High School, sponsored by the Visalia-Sequoia Branch, Emily Shumway, from Summerville High School and sponsored by the Sonora Branch, and Jasmine Khangura, a junior at Franklin High School, sponsored by the Sacramento Branch.

These three students and their chaperones will enjoy an all expense-paid  trip to the AAUW CA convention for the fifth annual SPEECH TREK-ELEANOR STEM ALLEN MEMORIAL final competition on April 9, 2011 in Irvine.  They will compete for a $1000 first place gift and $500 for second and third place.  They will also receive a $50 gift certificate for micro financing with Kiva, an entrepreneurial organization that helps women and girls finance their own businesses.
