Soroptomist International Honors Donna Mertens

Posted At : July 3, 2012 8:41 PM

Donna Mertens, AAUW CA Chief Financial Officer, was presented with the 2012 Ruby Award by SIVV at their annual awards dinner in Victorville on June 20. Formerly the “Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award”, the “Soroptimist Ruby Award” is for Women Helping Women.

A ruby is also a deep red gemstone associated with wisdom, importance, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love: all words embodying the strong and compassionate women who are our award recipients. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who have worked to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work.

Donna thanked June Bergstrom from AAUW Victor Valley and Sue Thomas from American Security Bank for nominating her. The projects she talked about were the “Celebrating Women in Math and Science Conference” for high school girls and “As One I Can” a community event built around the award winning movie “A Powerful Noise” by recognizing that one person can make a difference. Her final comment was, “I’m truly honored to accept this award, but we all know that it takes many people to make these events a success.”
