Financial Literacy: $tart $mart Presented Three Workshops
Financial Literacy’s $tart $mart program completed three workshops in March. The program is designed to provide college students with the information needed to bridge the “Gender Wage Gap”. Director Bakula Maniar is pleased that the program is off to a good start and says it was thrilling to see how hungry the students are for financial literacy.

Pictured above, clockwise from the upper left, are: 1) Sierra College students, with local AAUW members and Annie Houle, registering for the workshop; 2) students and members role-playing at Sierra workshop; 2) Director Bakula Maniar, three student sisters at Mt. San Jacinto College with Houle; 4) Houle conducting the training at Mt. San Jacinto.
On Friday March 18 a workshop at Sierra College in Rocklin near Sacramento was trained by Annie Houle from WAGE. Organized by Roseville- South Placer branch, the workshop was attended by fifteen members and seven students. Special thanks go to Michele Stark and Sue Orvis for an excellent job. The branch contributed half of the workshop fees and AAUW CA covered the other half.
Saturday March 19th a workshop, also trained by Annie Houle, was held at Mt. San Jacinto College in Manifee and attended by seventeen members from around southern California and eighteen students. Ms. Joanna Quejada, the Dean of Students Affairs, was also with us for most of the workshop. Mt. San Jacinto College is our partner university and twelve out of the eighteen student attendees are Student Affiliate members of AAUW. Most of them had participated in our Financial Literacy survey and were eager to learn these special skills of negotiating salaries and basic budgeting.
On Tuesday March 15 two of our previously trained facilitators, Eunis Christenson and Kelly Nilsson, held a workshop at San Diego State University, School of Engineering. Forty students from the engineering school attended the event. To the surprise of the facilitators, there were only five women attendees and the rest of were men. Interesting! It tells us we need more women in STEM.
Financial Literacy - $tart $mart is now approved by AAUW CA's Special Project Fund so your donations are tax deductible. We hope to host more workshops at other Colleges and Universities. The students are counting on us.
