Report from CA Commission on the Status of Women
AAUW CA Director of International Advocacy, Sherry Ludwig, submitted this report June 30 to the board of directors:
"I presented on behalf of AAUW CA at the CA Commission on the Status of Women hearing that took place in San Diego last Thursday. The topic was CEDAW and the needs of immigrant women in CA.The Commission hearing was FABULOUS! The entire experience was extremely worthwhile.
First off, the venue was the Moot Court at Cal Western School of Law. A terrific venue! Patricia said it looked like the show Matclock. (We took pix, but now have to figure out how to get them off our phones.) It was a huge courtroom that had a table set up directly in front of the commissioners with a table mike. The speakers were called up in groups of three, myself included, and each of us presented from left to right. We had three minutes to present and not two as had been expected. At the thirty second mark a sign was held up and then another when time was up. Twenty-six people presented, among whom was Dr. Pat Washington (an AAUW LAF plaintiff), who spoke to the issue of AB 1413. Seventy-six people presented in San Francisco on June 19th.
Several commissioners came up to speak to me (and my cheerleaders Lynne, Patricia and Edwina Shell-Johnson) during the break, including Mary Wiberg, Executive Director, Darlene Ayers-Johnson, VP of the Board of Port Commissioners, and Elmy Bermejo.
Afterwards there were catered refreshments paid for by the Commission, to include sandwiches, beer and wine. A nice touch, wouldn't you say? All in all, an inspiring day. Some of the testimony given by private parties was heart-wrenching, but we learned a great deal and had the opportunity to chat after the event, which was well attended by young and old alike, and by men and women.
BTW, Assemblywoman Saldana from San Diego was there, having arrived later, along with Senator Sheila Kuehl. Very inspiring indeed! Anne Henke will present in Fontana on July 23rd."

Hello. As a brand new member today, I would like to be able to read more about CEDAW (what is it?) what the AAUW's immigrant women's advocacy position, which sounds interesting but I know nothing about it. Thanks!
