November 2008 Ballot: AAUW CA Opposes Proposition 8

Posted At : October 20, 2008 3:03 AM

AAUW California Opposes Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that would deny the right to marry to gay and lesbian Californians.

The text of Proposition 8 is just fourteen words long. “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California”.

The proponents want to use the state constitution to legally discriminate against the lesbian and gay community by denying the right to marry.

Proposition 22, a statute not a constitutional amendment, was recently declared unconstitutional by the California Supreme Court. AAUW CA opposed Proposition 22 based on organizational abhorrence of discrimination in any form and strong member commitment to vigorous enforcement and expansion of civil rights.

AAUW CA opposes Proposition 8 based on our public policy principles and because we oppose using the California constitution to limit rights. Proposition 8 would create a second-class citizenship for some Californians. We cannot support that some Californians are less equal than others.

Members are urged to vote no on Proposition 8
