November 2008 Ballot: AAUW CA Opposes Proposition 4

November 2008 Ballot: AAUW CA Opposes Proposition 4 that requires doctors to notify parents before performing an abortion for a minor.

We all want our children to come to us for support and guidance when life-altering decisions must be made. We do our best to protect our children from dangers and prepare them to enter the world as confident adults. Our children will come to us first and they can count on us to support them in trying times.

But, we also have a societal duty to all children, some of whom have no one to help them at times of crisis. Unfortunately, some children face situations in which their families are the problem. How will these daughters navigate through crises caused by their families?

The women, mothers and grandmothers all, on the AAUW California public policy committee concluded that these most vulnerable of girls would be further harmed by Proposition 4. The prospect of going to court alone or filing charges of abuse against parents could force desperate girls to choose between danger in their troubled homes or danger in unsafe illegal abortions.

We urge all members to take time to reflect on this decision and vote no on Proposition 4.
